Couples and Family Therapy

What is Couples Therapy?

This therapy is for couples who are having difficulties in their relationship, irrespective of their marital status, sexuality and whether they are living together or apart.

Who would benefit?

Our aim is to provide a safe setting in which partners can explore their relationship and understand their difficulties.  The kind of difficulties that couples may want help with include:

  • Arguing a lot.
  • Unhappy in their sexual relationship.
  • Struggling with establishing a second marriage or being a step-family.
  • Experiencing difficulties over particular symptoms or illness of one partner.
  • Having problems in their relationship with their children.
  • Unhappy about any aspect of their relationship together, possibly thinking about separation or divorce, feeling unable to stay together or to part.
  • Experiences of stress, anxiety or depression within the relationship.

What is Family Therapy?

This therapy helps people express and explore difficulties in their relationships.  Different people have different ideas of what ‘family’ means.  We take ‘family’ to describe any group of people who care about each other and see themselves as a family.

Who would benefit?

Facing difficulties in the family is not an easy task.  We like to hear and work with everyone in the family’s point of view.  We will speak to families about how best to do this.

Family Therapy is useful for families experiencing a wide range of difficulties and relationship problems including:

  • Frequent arguments and conflict in the family.
  • Difficulties in the relationships between parents and children.
  • Struggling with step-family relationships.
  • Illness and disability in the family.
  • Difficulties following separation or divorce.
  • Family members experiencing anxiety, depression or other mental health difficulties.
  • Anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders.
  • Self-harm.
  • The effects of trauma.

How to access Couples and Family Therapy

The couple or family can self-refer or a GP can refer for either couples or family therapy. An initial telephone consultation is offered to hear about the difficulties that the couple and/or family are experiencing.  Following this, the couple or family can be offered a one and a half hour assessment session to consider the history of the difficulties and what the hopes are for things to be different.

Ongoing sessions for couples or family therapy are one hour in length and the frequency is agreed at the initial assessment.  The number of sessions are also negotiable and work can range from a short series of sessions to longer term work.

To discuss this service contact Simon Jubb, Couples and Family Therapist, on 01904 430370.
