Stress at work - counselling
Pressure is part and parcel of work and helps to keep us motivated. But excessive pressure can lead to stress, which undermines performance, is costly to employers and can make people ill.
Stress is now seen as the biggest growing cause of workplace absence. According to the HSE:
-
Work-related stress accounts for over a third of all new incidences of ill health.
-
Each case of work-related stress, depression or anxiety related ill health leads to an average of 27 working days lost.
-
A total of 10.8 million working days were lost to work-related stress, depression and anxiety in 2010/11.
-
The industries that reported the highest rates of total work-related stress in the last three years were health and social care, education and public administration.
Signs of stress to look out for include:
-
Frustration/irritability among staff
-
Conflicts between employees
-
Poor work performance
-
Dissatisfaction with job tasks
-
Low morale/enthusiasm/commitment at work
-
Decreased productivity
-
Increased absenteeism
-
Increased staff turnover
As well as reducing sickness absence costs to an organisation, tackling stress can have a positive effect on:
-
Employee commitment to work
-
Staff performance and productivity
-
Staff turnover or intention to leave
-
Staff recruitment and retention
-
Customer satisfaction
-
Organisational image and reputation.
