'tis the season to be jolly?

Christmas is billed as a time for the family but many families find it brings as many arguments and tensions as glad tidings of great joy.  The Tuke Centre has always worked with couples and individuals having difficulties with their relationships.  However, we long wanted to have extra space to see whole families together, to provide therapy and support for all sorts of family difficulties.

This presented us with a dilemma.  People coming to The Tuke Centre have always commented on the calm atmosphere of our beautiful detached house, and how helpful it is to receive expert support in a homely environment.  We did not believe a new building would give us the same quality of environment, so instead embarked on an ambitious plan to extend the existing building.  Careful work by architects, planners and local builders has given us 6 extra consulting rooms, and improved space for waiting, while retaining the appearance and character of the original building.  Most importantly, people tell us it still feels homely.

We now have rooms to help couples with relationship and sexual difficulties, but also a room to work with families on how they communicate, how to help family members with particular difficulties, and how to be more able to enjoy not just endure time together.

Our new space also allows us to work with more individuals.  Christmas can often heighten feelings of loneliness, isolation or even depression.  It can also increase awareness of losses, bereavements, or difficult experiences in the past.  Work can often be a particular pressure around holiday periods and insecurity about work can make it hard to enjoy hard earned time off.

What ever your reason for contacting The Tuke Centre you will be offered a consultation with a therapist over the phone, free of charge, within 24 hours.  That will clarify what kind of help you are looking for and whether we might be able to help.  This is followed by an initial meeting, usually within two weeks, to confirm how we will work with you.  If, for some reason, we can’t help, we shall at least help you be clear what you need and how to get it.  More than 30 counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists are on hand to make sure we provide the particular help you need, over however long a period you need.

There is a cost for this help of course.  If you are paying for yourself, there is a fixed charge for the first meeting.  That provides a clear recommendation for what is needed, and clear pricing for that help.  We agree how long treatment will last and how much it will cost.  Occasionally we need time to discuss needs with colleagues after an initial meeting, and occasionally it might take two meetings to come to a clear recommendation.  You may also be able to be funded by health insurance, your employer, or by the NHS if your GP is able to arrange funding.

Our building has changed but we are still here to help whatever your reason for calling, and whatever the time of year.
