Getting mentally ill people back to work, or helping them to stay in work, is vital according to the head of a York mental health centre.
Chris Powell, of the Tuke Centre, said "Long-term sickness absence can have a devasting effect on businesses. Sickness absence costs UK businesses more than £12billion a year." The psychological therapy service, in Green Dykes Lane, was marking World Mental Health Day by appealing to employers to support workers by providing counselling and psychological therapy as a staff benefit.
Mr Powell said in any one year, one-in-six workers would have depression or anxiety.
The Tuke Centre has been working with local employers for 16 years. It provides a single point of contact for the full range of psychological therapies, including counselling, psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry.
