About Dr Andrea Brown
I am a consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist. I practice Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and within this framework I use Compassion Focussed Therapy and Strength Based Therapy.
My areas of interest are: eating disorders including men’s eating disorders. I have an interest in disordered eating associated with a number of conditions including anxiety and mood disorders, gender issues and autism.
At the Tuke Centre, I work in the Eating Disorders Service. I carry out assessments and liaise with GPs. I see some people for therapy. I also run the Eating Disorders Inpatient Unit at the Retreat (the Naomi Unit). I am a member of the executive committee of the Eating Disorders faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
I am committed to service development and innovation.
I obtained my medical degree from Leeds University in 1990. After training to become a surgeon, I spend 2 ½ years working in research at Oxford University. I then returned to medicine when I retrained to be a psychiatrist. I completed my higher training in 2006 and have worked at the Retreat ever since.
